And so it was that in response to a Facebook meme I posted a list of the 12 LPs that have had the most influence on me, both personally and musically. And it was like looking in a mirror, for all was male and white.

So, I thought, what if the list weren’t male and white (for I like to use the subjunctive). And so I sat down with my MacBook Pro and my text editor of choice (iA Writer, since you didn’t ask) and…. Well the first few records came easily. The rest not so. This puzzled me till I realised that most of the black, female music I like is soul music, a “genre” that has always leant itself to the single rather than the long player.

Love of life makes you feel higher

The first thing I do after adding a song to iTunes is delete the genre. If ever a label were completely devoid of meaning, it is ”alternative & punk”; likewise “rock” or “pop”.

I like to think of most of the music on this blog, itself a reasonable reflection of my complete collection, as “rock ’n’ pop”, a description that blends what have been two predominant, mutually nourishing streams in popular music since Elvis first gyrated his hips.

Sadly it’s a label that’s never caught on and, in the absence of a better suggestion, the genre field stays blank.

Got to give up life in this netherworld

How can you not love someone who spells their name Siouxsie and sings like a banshee?

Thankfully Siouxsie Sioux’s singing heralded no-one’s death, rather a string of brilliant singles and LPs, up to and including Mantaray, her 2007 solo outing. (Feel free to exclude The Creatures’ catalogue at this stage.)
