And so it was that in response to a Facebook meme I posted a list of the 12 LPs that have had the most influence on me, both personally and musically. And it was like looking in a mirror, for all was male and white.

So, I thought, what if the list weren’t male and white (for I like to use the subjunctive). And so I sat down with my MacBook Pro and my text editor of choice (iA Writer, since you didn’t ask) and…. Well the first few records came easily. The rest not so. This puzzled me till I realised that most of the black, female music I like is soul music, a “genre” that has always leant itself to the single rather than the long player.

The Rosie Taylor Project were born in the small living room of a redbrick Victorian house in Leeds. There is no word of Rosie, but Jonny, Sophie, Nick, Jon, Sam and Shakey have a couple of LPs to their names, including this year’s Twin Beds.

The preceding single will be familiar to regular readers, but the record’s universal excellence justifies further mention for either of its standout tracks.

The day that Brussels burned

On May 22, 1967, fire engulfed L’Innovation department store in Brussels, killing 322 people and sparking cold war controversy. It was a tragedy in a year of tragedies that included the escalation of the Vietnam war — or American War as the Vietnamese call it, the start of the horrendous and doomed fight for Biafran independence in Nigeria, flooding that killed 462 people in Lisbon and the Stockport Air Disaster. And The Doors released their first LP.
