Up and away at the first sign of day

Sunrise over Amelenberg

Strawberry Whiplash is a cracking name for a band, whose music had never really lived up to the quality of its name. Until this year and the release of their debut LP, Hits in the Car, pure indie-pop of the very best kind.

This, the record’s final track, is the perfect tune to wake up to.

Let’s run away and join the circus

Gursky

This photo was inspired by my good cyber friend, Bitrot, aka @pigonwheels, with a nod to Andreas Gursky. It reminds me of summer evenings in Switzerland, staring at the blue sky, watching the birds and waiting for the spectacular storms to circle in from the north and west, but could have been taken almost anywhere.

I’m glad that I didn’t title the picture; somehow IMG_0009 seems apt. It’s a name that hangs on doubtless tens of thousands of digital pics, as anonymous and ubiquitous as the image itself.

Last chance to turn around

Museum Liner

During a trip to Appenzell in 2009 I took four photos of Museum Liner, the elegant building that houses the art collection of the late Carl August Liner. Designed by Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer and completed in 1998, the museum stands in marked contrast to the painted wooden houses that comprise the heart of this beautiful town at the foot of the Swiss Alps.

Of the four, the least popular — if the number of views is a reliable indicator — is this one, taken as I turned back for one last look. But popularity be damned; it’s one of a handful of personal favourites among the 1,632 photos that I’ve posted, to date, on Flickr.

A simple summer salad

Being an expat/economic migrant/immigrant has spoilt me. I can no longer bring myself to buy fruit and vegetables of international origin in a supermarket, when I know that nearby will be a market where I can buy fresher and cheaper local produce. Local markets are also by their nature seasonal (even if I did see some Kenyan beans this week), which at the moment means white asparagus, broad beans and fresh peas. Tossed with some bacon, olive oil, mint, basil and lemon juice and topped with fresh goat’s cheese they made a delicious salad.

Spotted as I cycled into Winterthur this morning. Somehow I don’t think I’ll be heading Töss-wards to try one out.
