Back to school

School starts again tomorrow, which means that the flow of music onto these pages will necessarily slow to a trickle.

But tomorrow leaves just enough time for a round-up of some of the tunes that have brightened some of the many grey days we’ve had recently.

First up, a track that could have come straight out of the Philadelphia branch of the Peter Hook school of bass riffs. And that is no bad thing.

Pet Milk // Ostalgia

Girl Ray are appearing at the BBC Radio 6 Music Festival in Glasgow next month. Doubtless indie stardom awaits, so take a moment to enjoy them before they were famous, with this excellent debut a-side, released in November.

Girl Ray // Trouble

2016 was a quiet year, release-wise, for Welsh five-piece Joanna Gruesome. They followed 2015’s Peanut Butter LP with just the one single, but if ever a record proved that old adage about quality over quantity, this was it.

Joanna Gruesome // Pretty Fucking Sick of it all

And finally, this. I don’t quite know what to make of the debut single from Glasgow’s Vital Idles, but I do know that it’s strangely brilliant.

Vital Idles // My Sentiments/Garden
