heard on the wire

You’re a big, fat, bigoted arsehole

I discovered Ballboy when I bought All the Records on the Radio are Shite because I liked the title. It wasn’t long before I scoured record shops for as much of their music as I could find.

The result: Ballboy lie second in my list of all-time favourite scottish bands of all-time, just behind Belle and Sebastian and marginally ahead of fellow country-tinged songsmiths, Camera Obscura.

That second place owes much to songwriter Gordon McIntyre’s lyrics, from the wistful beauty of I Lost You but I Found Country Music — as good a song about lost love as any that’s been written — to the scornful contempt of my 2003 song-from-each-year-of-my-life.

Page 3 girls get you excited
You support Rangers and Man United.
All you do all day is take up space
With your stupid look on your stupid face

The title is taken from the Ulster Loyalist marching song of the same name; the sentiment couldn’t be more different.
