Day 18 — a song I wish I heard on the radio
That would be any song played by John Peel, had he not met a premature death in 2004. Quite simply, without Peel my music collection would be threadbare. Either that or I’d be sinking quickly into late middle age to the sounds of Coldplay and Elbow.
Instead I am invigorated daily by astonishing records that no one else would ever have played and by the bands that carry on the legacy. And if one band encapsulates that legacy, it’s the mighty Fall.
Which song to choose: Theme From Sparta FC, football results music and number one in Peel’s festive fifty in that fateful year?; Eat Y’Self Fitter, the Fall record Peel would have taken to his desert island?; or perhaps the genius cover version of Sister Sledge’s Lost in Music?
But Peel himself would have picked something from the newest Fall LP, last year’s brilliant Your Future, Our Clutter. So it is to Lancashire that we go.
